Magtech General Construction & Trading Pte Ltd supplied and installed an SS316 stainless steel sectional water tank at 11 Greenleaf View, Singapore, serving domestic water for a landed home.
The tank measures 2m (L) x 1m (W) x 1m (H) and is installed at roof level on a purpose-built galvanised steel support frame. It is fitted with a manhole cover, a vent, and an external access ladder with handrails so that the tank can be inspected and maintained safely.
SS316 was specified because the tank stores domestic water. Grade 316 stainless steel contains molybdenum, which gives it markedly better resistance to chlorides and pitting than Grade 304, and it is the grade required for potable water storage in Singapore. On a tank of this size the difference in cost is modest; the difference in compliance is not.
Installing at roof level on a landed property is where the sectional design earns its place. The tank arrives as individual panels that can be carried up and assembled in position, rather than needing a one-piece vessel lifted in. That keeps the installation simple on a residential site where craneage and access are limited.
The tank stores water for domestic use, so Grade 316 stainless was specified rather than the visually identical Grade 304, which is suited to non-potable and fire protection duty.
A galvanised steel support frame was fabricated and installed to carry the tank at roof level, spreading the load and holding the tank clear of the roof sheeting.
Panels were carried up and assembled in position, fittings and access ladder installed, and the tank tested and connected before handover.
With stainless steel tanks the grade is not a matter of preference. SS304 and SS316 look identical once installed, but only Grade 316 is accepted for potable water storage in Singapore – SS304 belongs on fire protection and non-potable duty. On a small domestic tank the price gap between the two is modest, and it is not worth saving.
