NON-POTABLE STAINLESS STEEL WATER STORAGE

SS304 Stainless Steel Water Tanks in Singapore

SS304 stainless steel sectional water tanks are intended for non-potable water storage, commercial and industrial water systems, and selected fire-protection applications. Their modular construction provides a durable and corrosion-resistant alternative where stainless steel is preferred over a coated steel tank.

SS304 is not suitable for potable water service installations in Singapore. PUB’s stipulated standards require stainless steel sectional water storage tanks used for potable water service to be Grade 316 or better. SS316 should also be considered for coastal, marine or higher-chloride environments.

MODULAR STAINLESS STEEL CONSTRUCTION

How SUNNIK Stainless Steel Panels Are Manufactured

SUNNIK stainless steel tanks use hydraulically pressed modular panels manufactured from stainless steel plate. Depending on the selected product specification, the manufacturing process may include precision laser cutting, robotic welding, dye-penetrant inspection, pickling and passivation, and hydrostatic testing.

Pickling and passivation help restore the stainless steel’s protective passive layer after fabrication. Unlike coated steel tanks, stainless steel tanks do not depend on an applied internal or external coating for corrosion protection, eliminating the risk of the protective coating peeling or degrading over time.

INSTALLATION DETAILS

What Must Be Confirmed Before Installation

The required capacity, available footprint, site access, water usage and stainless steel grade should be confirmed before manufacturing begins.
01

Intended Water Use

Confirm that SS304 is appropriate for the stored water and that the installation is not intended for potable service.

02

Available Footprint

Check the available length, width and height before selecting the modular tank configuration.

03

Effective Capacity

Specify the required effective capacity rather than relying only on nominal gross volume.

04

Site Access

Modular panels can be transported separately and assembled within restricted-access plant rooms and tank areas.

05

Panel Schedule

Panel thickness must correspond with the final tank height, configuration and approved design conditions.

06

Project Documentation

Final dimensions, fittings and technical specifications should be confirmed against the approved drawings and SUNNIK technical submission.
Water Tank Selection Guide

For potable-water applications in Singapore, stainless steel sectional tanks must comply with PUB’s prevailing stipulated standards and requirements. SS304 is not suitable for potable service, so an appropriate SS316 tank system should be selected for these installations. COMMON QUESTIONS

If Your Question Is Not Here Contact Us

Short answers to the questions most often raised during tank selection and quotation review.

No. PUB stipulates a minimum of Grade 316 for stainless steel sectional tanks used in potable-water service, so SS304 is not suitable for potable use in Singapore.

SS304 remains appropriate for suitable non-potable applications such as selected fire-protection, sprinkler and flushing-water storage, subject to the project specification.

HDG pressed steel remains the more cost-effective and commonly specified option for fire-protection water storage in Singapore. SS304 has a higher initial cost but provides an uncoated stainless steel surface, eliminating maintenance issues associated with peeling or deteriorating protective coatings.

The appropriate option depends on the project specification, site environment, budget and required service life. Magtech can review the intended water usage and project requirements before recommending SS304 or HDG.

When to choose an HDG pressed steel tank and when FRP is the compliant choice →

With the correct grade selection, proper installation and regular maintenance, stainless steel sectional tanks typically last around 20 to 30 years.

Actual service life depends on water quality, site environment, cleaning, inspection and timely repair of damaged components.

Read the How long do water tanks last in Singapore? →

Both are stainless steel, but they serve different purposes:

  • SS316 is suitable for potable (drinking) water storage. In Singapore, only SS316 and FRP/GRP tanks comply with standards for drinking water use.
  • SS304 is suitable for non-potable water storage and fire protection applications. It is a more cost-effective option and is widely used for industrial and commercial water storage.

If your water is not for drinking purposes, SS304 is generally the more practical and economical choice. If drinking water compliance is required, SS316 is the appropriate option.
