POTABLE STAINLESS STEEL WATER STORAGE

SS316 Stainless Steel Water Tanks in Singapore

SS316 stainless steel sectional water tanks are designed for potable water storage and applications requiring greater resistance to corrosion. They are commonly selected for domestic water systems, commercial and industrial developments, and sites exposed to coastal or higher-chloride conditions.

For potable water service installations in Singapore, PUB’s stipulated standards require stainless steel sectional water storage tanks to use Grade 316 stainless steel or better throughout the tank panels. The complete water service installation must also comply with the Public Utilities (Water Supply) RegulationsSS 636 and prevailing PUB requirements.

MODULAR STAINLESS STEEL CONSTRUCTION

How SUNNIK Stainless Steel Panels Are Manufactured

SUNNIK stainless steel tanks use hydraulically pressed modular panels manufactured from stainless steel plate. Depending on the selected product specification, the manufacturing process may include precision laser cutting, robotic welding, dye-penetrant inspection, pickling and passivation, and hydrostatic testing.

Pickling and passivation help restore the stainless steel’s protective passive layer after fabrication. Unlike coated steel tanks, stainless steel tanks do not depend on an applied internal or external coating for corrosion protection, eliminating the risk of the protective coating peeling or degrading over time.

Dye-penetrant inspection and hydrostatic testing may be included according to the selected product specification.

SIZES & TECHNICAL PERFORMANCE

Confirm the Tank Dimensions, Capacity and Panel Thickness

The modular format allows the tank footprint, height and capacity to be configured around the available installation space. Panel thickness depends on the final tank dimensions, configuration and design conditions. Standard panel systems include 1.0 × 1.0 m and 1.22 × 1.22 m modules. Selected 1.0 × 0.5 m and 1.0 × 1.5 m panel options may be available where required by the approved configuration.

INSTALLATION DETAILS

What Must Be Confirmed Before Installation

The required effective capacity, available footprint, site access, potable-water requirements and complete SS316 tank specification should be confirmed before manufacturing begins.
01

Intended Water Use

Confirm whether the tank forms part of a potable-water service installation and which PUB requirements apply.

02

Complete Tank Construction

Confirm the required material grade for the tank body, drainage panels, bottom panels, roof covers and applicable water-contact components.

03

Effective Capacity

Specify the required effective capacity rather than relying only on nominal gross volume.

04

Site Access

Modular panels can be transported separately and assembled within restricted-access plant rooms and tank areas.

05

Support Structure

The supporting base and capping-flat requirements must correspond with the selected module system and approved tank design. Tanks above 3 m may require steel capping flats, while configurations above the normal height schedule require manufacturer approval.

06

Project Documentation

Final dimensions, fittings, material certificates and technical specifications should be reviewed against the approved drawings and SUNNIK technical submission before installation.
Water Tank Selection Guide

Which material does my project actually need?

Material is not a free choice in Singapore. The application determines it, and specifying the wrong one produces a rejected submission rather than a saving.

COMMON QUESTIONS

If Your Question Is Not Here Contact Us

Short answers to the questions most often raised during tank selection and quotation review.

Both are stainless steel, but they serve different purposes:

  • SS316 is suitable for potable (drinking) water storage. In Singapore, only SS316 and FRP/GRP tanks comply with standards for drinking water use.
  • SS304 is suitable for non-potable water storage and fire protection applications. It is a more cost-effective option and is widely used for industrial and commercial water storage.

If your water is not for drinking purposes, SS304 is generally the more practical and economical choice. If drinking water compliance is required, SS316 is the appropriate option.

Read the SS304 vs SS316 Water Tanks in Singapore: Which Grade Does PUB Actually Require? →

For potable, coastal, or hygiene-critical applications, yes — both for compliance and for its superior resistance to chloride pitting, which extends service life and lowers lifetime cost.

Read the Commercial Water Tank Replacement Cost in Singapore: What Affects the Price? →

With correct grade selection and good maintenance, stainless steel tanks typically last around 20 to 30 years — generally longer than FRP, which tends to last around 15 to 20 years.

Potable water tanks must be inspected, cleaned, and certified by a Licensed Plumber at least once every 12 months under PUB regulations.
