Where are HDG pressed steel tanks used?
Hot-dip galvanised pressed steel is the default material for fire protection water storage in Singapore. It is specified for sprinkler tanks, hosereel tanks and wet riser tanks across commercial, industrial and infrastructure buildings, and it performs particularly well in exposed outdoor and rooftop positions where corrosion resistance and structural strength both matter.
HDG is not approved for potable water. Where a tank stores drinking water, the material must be FRP/GRP tested to SS 245:2014, or stainless steel at minimum Grade 316 under SS 636. Specifying HDG for a potable duty produces a rejected submission, not a saving.

What standards do pressed steel water tanks meet?
Design and manufacture follow BS 1564:1975 and SANS 10329:2020, with base material to BS EN 10025:2004 Grade S275. Galvanising is to ISO 1461:2009, bolts to BS 4190, and the jointing sealant is non-toxic and tested to BS 6920. Tanks are rated for liquid density 1.0, ambient temperature 30 °C and pH 6 to 8.
Singapore fire specifications are written around SS 22, the Singapore Standard for pressed steel sectional tanks, together with LPCB listing. It is worth being precise about what SS 22 is: it is a Singapore Standard, not an SCDF certification. SCDF does not certify the standard — the Fire Code references it, which is why fire consultants ask for it.
SS 22:1979 is also listed as obsolescent on the Singapore Standards eShop, where it covers 1220 mm square pressed steel plates. It remains the standard Singapore fire specifications are written to, so compliance is unaffected — but consultants do raise it, and it is better answered openly than discovered later.


What panel sizes and plate thicknesses are available?
Panels are supplied in 1.22 m × 1.22 m and 1.00 m × 1.00 m modules as standard. Half modules of 0.5 × 1.0 m, 0.6 × 1.22 m and 0.5 × 0.5 m are available on request, which is what allows a tank to be built to an awkward plant room rather than the plant room being built to the tank.
Plate thickness is set by tank height and by the design standard. SS 22 is our default; SANS is available on request. The difference matters — SS 22 holds most panels at a flat 5 mm, while SANS steps thickness down tier by tier.

Roof covers are hydraulically pressed at 1.5 mm or 3.0 mm, with pitched or domed profiles available on request.

Panel thickness is the clearest difference between tanks that look identical in a photograph. Some imported panels are supplied at 3 to 4 mm where the equivalent SUNNIK panel is 5 mm. That difference does not show on handover day. It shows in year twelve.
Internal, external or hybrid reinforcement — which does your project need?
A pressed steel tank has to be reinforced to hold its shape under load, and there are three ways to do it. This is one of the few specification choices that genuinely changes both the price and the long-term behaviour of the tank, and it is rarely explained before a quotation lands.
Internal reinforcement uses angle stays inside the tank at the junction of two or more plates, connecting sides to bottom, ends to bottom, and horizontally from side to side and side to end. This is the most common design in Singapore. It is the cheaper option and it is standard practice here, which is why most tanks you will see locally are built this way.
External reinforcement uses hot-dip galvanised universal beam steel with brackets on the outside of the tank, with no bracing inside the water at all. It is more stable, and because nothing structural sits in the water it removes a corrosion path and a contamination path at the same time. It also makes internal inspection and cleaning easier over the tank’s life. It costs more than internal reinforcement.
Hybrid reinforcement combines both. It is specified where structural stability matters most — typically countries with seismic requirements — and it is considerably more expensive than either option on its own. It is rarely required in Singapore.
For most Singapore projects, internal reinforcement is the appropriate standard. External is a deliberate upgrade, worth considering where stored water quality or ease of internal inspection justify the additional cost — potable-adjacent duties and tanks with difficult access are the usual cases. What does hot-dip galvanising actually do?
Hot-dip galvanising is the corrosion protection that gives these tanks their service life, and it is applied to ISO 1461:2009. The finished panel is immersed in molten zinc rather than sprayed or painted, so the zinc bonds metallurgically to the steel instead of sitting on top of it.
That distinction matters more than it sounds. A painted or coated tank fails first at its edges, bolt holes and cut lines — precisely the points where water sits and where a coating is thinnest. Immersion coats every surface, including edges and holes, to a uniform standard. It is why a hot-dip galvanised pressed steel tank has a typical service life of 20 to 25 years in Singapore conditions, and why fire specifications are written around it.
Galvanising is applied after the panels are pressed, not before. Pressing a pre-galvanised sheet would crack the coating at exactly the fold lines that carry the structural load.
What capacity can a pressed steel tank hold?
Capacity is set by footprint and height. Using 1.22 m imperial modules, a 1220 × 1220 mm tank at one module high holds approximately 1.82 m³, and the tabulated range extends to roughly 1,229 m³ at a 15,860 × 15,860 mm footprint at 4.88 m high. Metric 1.0 m modules run to approximately 507 m³ at 3 m high and 676 m³ at 4 m.
Those are nominal figures with no freeboard. Effective capacity is always lower once freeboard and fittings are accounted for, so confirm the effective requirement rather than the nominal one before a tank is sized. We will do that calculation as part of any quotation.
What does the site need to provide?
Support beams are required at 1.0 m centres for metric modules or 1.22 m centres for imperial, with a level tolerance of ±6.0 mm across the base. A minimum of 500 mm clearance is needed around and beneath the tank, and a minimum of 750 mm above the roof for manhole access. Above 3000 mm, the purchaser provides steel capping flats on the concrete support.
The reinforced concrete plinth is a separate contractor’s scope and is not included in our supply. Tanks must be installed and certified by an approved installer or the manufacturer’s warranty is void.

Warranty
Our standard warranty for manufacturing defects is two (2) years from the date of tank completion. This may be reviewed and adjusted upon mutual agreement, depending on project requirements.
The Defects Liability Period (DLP) for workmanship is one (1) year from the date of completion of installation.

What is pressed steel?
Pressed steel is mild steel plate that has been hydraulically pressed into a ribbed panel at 45° and 90° to the face. Pressing the panel gives it structural stiffness that a flat plate of the same thickness would not have, which is what allows a bolted sectional tank to hold its shape under load.
What is the difference between HDG and pressed steel?
They describe different things. Pressed steel is the panel forming process; HDG, or hot-dip galvanising, is the corrosion protection applied afterwards to ISO 1461. An HDG pressed steel tank is both.
