Magtech General Construction & Trading Pte Ltd replaced a hosereel water tank at 300 Thomson Road, a church in Singapore. The old tank was dismantled and disposed of, and a new SS304 stainless steel sectional panel tank was supplied and installed on a skid base on the rooftop plant deck, alongside the building’s air-conditioning condensers and fire pipework.

The new tank measures (1+1)m x 1m x 1m (H): two 1 m compartments separated by a partition, so one side can be drained for inspection while the other keeps the hosereel system charged. Base and side panels are 2 mm stainless steel with 1 mm hydraulically pressed roof covers, and the tank carries an external ladder, manhole and air vent.
The client preferred a stainless steel tank over hot-dip galvanised pressed steel, so Magtech proposed SS304. This is a fire protection tank, not a drinking water tank: Grade 304 gives good corrosion resistance on an exposed rooftop, is sufficient for hosereel and sprinkler storage, and is considerably more cost-effective than SS316. Grade 316 is reserved for potable water.
The tank sits between condenser units and existing pipework with no room for a crane lift. A sectional tank arrives as individual panels, so it was carried up and assembled in the gap the old tank left.
The client wanted stainless steel rather than HDG for this tank. Hosereel storage is non-potable, so SS304 is sufficient; specifying SS316 would have added cost without adding compliance.
The (1+1)m layout with a partition means the hosereel supply is never fully lost during cleaning or inspection, which is the main operational concern on a small fire tank.
Small fire tanks are easy to forget until an inspection flags them. A hosereel tank on a rooftop lives in heat, rain and pipe vibration, and when the old tank starts to corrode the fix is a like-for-like replacement, not a repair. Choosing the right stainless grade keeps the cost proportionate: SS304 is the correct grade for fire protection storage, and SS316 is only needed where the water will be drunk.
With over 35 years of experience and more than 4,000 water tanks installed across Asia, Magtech continues to deliver stainless steel water tank replacement for places of worship, commercial and residential buildings across Singapore.
