Understanding HDG Water Tank: Durable and Reliable Storage Solutions

HDG water tank guide-HDG Water Tank Installation at Pandan Loop in Singapore

HDG water tanks, also known as hot dipped galvanized water tanks, are widely known for their strength, durability, and ability to withstand harsh environments. Designed to meet various industrial, commercial, and firefighting needs, these tanks have become a preferred choice in industries across Singapore and beyond. In this blog, we will explore the benefits of HDG water tanks, their key applications, and why they are a reliable solution for different industries.

What is an HDG Water Tank?

An HDG (Hot Dipped Galvanized) water tank uses mild steel panels that are dipped in a molten zinc coating. This process provides excellent corrosion resistance, ensuring the steel is protected from rust and other forms of deterioration. This makes HDG water tanks ideal for outdoor installations and long-term use in varying climates.

Applications of HDG Water Tanks

HDG water tanks are commonly used in the following scenarios:

1. Fire Safety Systems

HDG water tanks store non-potable water for fire safety systems. Sprinkler water tanks, hose reel water tanks, and fire water tanks form essential components of any firefighting infrastructure, especially in industrial and commercial buildings. These tanks withstand the elements while maintaining their integrity during emergency situations.

2. Industrial and Commercial Water Storage

Industries and factories rely on HDG water tanks for general water storage. Their robust design allows them to store water for air-conditioning systems, production processes, or as a backup water supply.

Key Features of HDG Water Tanks

HDG water tanks offer a range of advantages, making them a popular choice for many applications:

  • Durability: The hot-dipped galvanized coating protects the steel from rust, extending the tank’s lifespan and reducing maintenance needs.
  • Weather Resistance: These tanks withstand extreme heat and heavy rainfall without compromising their structural integrity.
  • Customization: HDG water tanks come in various panel sizes, such as 1m x 1m and 1m x 0.5m, providing flexibility in design and installation for different space requirements.
  • Versatility: From fire safety to industrial water storage, HDG water tanks adapt to various needs.

Manufacturing Standards

At Magtech General Construction & Trading Pte Ltd, we ensure that our HDG water tanks meet the highest quality standards. We manufacture our tanks to comply with BS 1564 and hot-dip galvanize them in accordance with ISO 1461:2009 standards. These certifications guarantee the durability and safety of our products.

Why Choose HDG Water Tanks?

When you need fire safety or water storage, durability and reliability are crucial. HDG water tanks provide:

  • Long-lasting performance with minimal maintenance.
  • Resistance to environmental factors like humidity, rain, and UV exposure.
  • Cost-effectiveness: Their long service life and low maintenance requirements make them a smart investment.

Frequently Asked Questions

FRP (Fiberglass Reinforced Plastic) and GRP (Glass Reinforced Plastic) tanks are the same material referred to by different names. They are significantly more affordable than steel tanks and are easier to maintain, making them the most common choice for general water storage applications in Singapore.

Steel tanks — whether HDG pressed steel or stainless steel — are typically heavier-duty, may offer a longer service life, and are often required for specific applications such as fire protection systems. However, they come at a higher cost.

We are happy to go through the options with you in more detail — feel free to contact us.

Both are stainless steel, but they serve different purposes:

  • SS316 is suitable for potable (drinking) water storage. In Singapore, only SS316 and FRP/GRP tanks comply with standards for drinking water use.
  • SS304 is suitable for non-potable water storage and fire protection applications. It is a more cost-effective option and is widely used for industrial and commercial water storage.

If your water is not for drinking purposes, SS304 is generally the more practical and economical choice. If drinking water compliance is required, SS316 is the appropriate option.

Yes. Our HDG pressed steel tanks are SS22 approved, which is the standard required for fire protection water tanks in Singapore under SCDF requirements. They are suitable for sprinkler systems, hosereel systems, and wet riser systems.

Please note that while we supply and install SS22-compliant tanks, we do not handle the SCDF submission process directly. If you require end-to-end support including regulatory submissions, we can connect you with our trusted partners who specialise in this.

Yes. We offer insulated FRP/GRP water tanks for applications where temperature control of stored water is important. Contact us to find out if an insulated tank is suitable for your requirements.
