Magtech General Construction & Trading Pte Ltd rectified a leak on an existing FRP panel water tank at 39 Quality Road, Singapore.

The tank was leaking from a localised area of the panel wall. Rather than remove and replace the affected panel, we rectified the leak by applying two layers of CSM fibreglass coating externally over the area.
CSM – chopped strand mat – is the glass reinforcement that an FRP panel is built from in the first place. Laid over the affected area and wetted out with resin, it cures into a new laminate bonded onto the existing panel. That matters: the repair is not a patch of some other material stuck over the top, it becomes part of the same laminate as the tank wall around it. Two layers rather than one gives the repair its thickness and strength.
The whole repair was carried out from the outside of the tank. There was no panel removal, no dismantling, and no need to send anyone inside the tank to work on it – which on a working industrial site is where most of the disruption of a tank repair normally comes from.
The first job on any leak is finding where it is actually coming from rather than where the water appears. Once the affected area on the panel wall was identified, the extent of the repair could be set.
We used CSM fibreglass and resin – the same materials the panel itself is made from – so the repair laminates onto the existing wall rather than sitting on it as a separate patch.
Two layers of CSM were applied over the affected area from outside the tank, building the thickness back up across the leak point.
The working area was cleaned down on completion and the tank handed back.
A leaking water tank does not automatically mean a new tank, and it does not automatically mean new panels either. The useful question is whether the panel wall itself is still sound. Where it is, and the leak is localised, a fibreglass laminate applied over the area rebuilds the wall in the material the tank is already made of – CSM and resin are what an FRP panel is, so a properly laid-up repair becomes part of the laminate rather than a cover over it.
The second thing that matters is access. A repair that can be done from the outside avoids draining the tank down, opening it up and sending someone inside to work in it. On a working site that access is usually where most of the cost and nearly all of the disruption sits, so a repair that stays external is worth a great deal more than the size of the job suggests.
None of that makes a laminate the right answer every time. Where a panel is cracked through or simply at the end of its service life, coating over it only buys time, and the honest recommendation is a panel or a full tank replacement. Knowing which of those situations you are looking at is what the inspection is for, and it is the part that decides whether a repair holds.
