Replacement Project

AIA Tower

Magtech General Construction & Trading Pte Ltd successfully completed the replacement of two (2) units of Fibreglass Reinforced Plastic (FRP/GRP) water tanks at AIA Tower, Singapore. This project involved domestic water usage within an existing building, requiring careful planning and execution due to site and access constraints.

PROJECT INFORMATION

PROJECT OVERVIEW

The replacement works included one (1) unit measuring (2m + 4m) x 2m x 2m (H), and another unit with a base area of 40 sqm and a height of 3m. Due to space limitations on site, one of the tanks was designed with an irregular (odd-shaped) configuration to fit the available footprint. This demonstrates the flexibility of sectional panel tank systems, which can be customised to suit non-standard layouts.

Working within a confined rooftop environment presented several challenges, including limited access, restricted working space especially for the odd-shape water tank, and the need to coordinate dismantling and installation efficiently. Despite these constraints, our team planned the works carefully to ensure smooth execution without compromising safety or quality.

01
Scope of work
  • Dismantling and removal of the two existing FRP water tanks
  • Supply and installation of one odd-shaped FRP sectional tank measuring (2m + 4m) x 2m x 2m (H)
  • Supply and installation of one FRP sectional tank with a 40 sqm base area and 3m height
  • Assembly of base structure, side panels, roof structure and internal reinforcements
  • Supply and fitting of all necessary accessories
  • Works planned around confined rooftop access and restricted working space
  • Testing and reinstatement for domestic water use
02
Project outcome
  • Both domestic water tanks replaced within a confined rooftop environment
  • Odd-shaped tank configured to fit the available footprint without structural alteration
  • Minimal disruption to the building’s daily operations
  • Tanks installed in accordance with SS245
  • Domestic water storage restored for an occupied commercial tower

The FRP tanks were designed in accordance with SS245, ensuring compliance with Singapore standards for sectional water tanks. Their corrosion resistance and lightweight properties make them well-suited for replacement projects, particularly in buildings where structural loading and access constraints are key considerations.

Why This Matters

Replacing tanks in an occupied building is harder than installing them in a new one. Access is limited, the working space is whatever the original design left behind, and the water supply belongs to tenants who are still using it. Sectional panel tanks help because they can be carried in piece by piece and built to an irregular footprint, but the planning around access and shutdown is what actually determines whether the job runs smoothly.

With over 35 years of experience and more than 4,000 water tanks installed across Asia, Magtech continues to deliver FRP water tank replacement for commercial buildings in Singapore.
