Magtech General Construction & Trading Pte Ltd supplied and installed a 5,000-litre FRP/GRP sectional rainwater collection tank at 36 Fifth Avenue, Singapore, extending the capacity of an existing rainwater harvesting system at a landed home.

PROJECT INFORMATION

PROJECT OVERVIEW

The property already had a rainwater collection tank, but the stored capacity was no longer enough for the way the water was being used. Rather than replace what was already there, the owner wanted to add storage and run both tanks together.

We attended site to look at where an additional tank could realistically go, and proposed a size to suit the position the owner preferred rather than asking the owner to work around a standard tank size. The result was a long, narrow tank at 5m (L) x 1m (W) x 1m (H), which runs neatly along the side of the house and takes up very little of the outdoor space.

The complication was the ground. The chosen position ran across a stepped terrace, with a change in floor level partway along where the tank had to sit. There was no level slab to build on, and a standard flat skid base would not have worked. We designed and fabricated a galvanised steel skid base with legs of differing heights, so the tank sits perfectly level across the step without any concrete work and without altering the finished paving or landscaping.

Once erected, the new tank was connected into the existing rainwater collection system with additional pipework, so that both tanks operate as a single system.

Our Approach

1. Site Visit and Sizing

We visited the property, discussed how the existing system was falling short, and looked at where an additional tank could go. The size was then set to suit that position – not chosen first and fitted in afterwards.

2. Working Around the Floor Levels

The chosen position crossed a stepped terrace. Instead of asking for a concrete slab to be cut in, we fabricated a skid base with legs of varying heights so the tank could sit level across the change in level, leaving the existing paving and planting untouched.

3. Assembly in a Narrow Position

The tank was assembled in place along the side of the house, with panels carried in by hand through the garden. A sectional tank is what makes that possible in a position this narrow.

4. Connection to the Existing System

Additional pipework was run to tie the new tank into the existing rainwater collection system, so the two tanks work together rather than independently.

5. Testing and Handover

The completed tank was checked and handed over, with the working area left clean.

 

Why This Matters

Adding to a rainwater system is rarely limited by the tank. It is limited by where the tank can physically go. Most homes do not have a spare level slab waiting, and forming one means concrete work, disruption and a position chosen by the builder rather than the owner.

A sectional tank solves that twice over. The size can be set to the space instead of picked from a range, and the skid base underneath it can be built to suit whatever the ground is actually doing. That is what allowed this tank to sit level across a stepped terrace, in the position the owner wanted, without disturbing finished landscaping.
