Magtech General Construction & Trading Pte Ltd supplied and installed a large FRP (GRP) sectional panel water tank on the roof of the ST Engineering data centre at 3 Ang Mo Kio Electronics Park Road, Singapore. The tank holds make-up water for the facility’s cooling system, where a reliable top-up supply matters as much as the chillers it serves.

The tank was not taken from a catalogue. Magtech’s team proposed the tank size from two constraints: the storage capacity the cooling system required, and the plinth that already existed on the roof. The result is a single tank of 10(5+5)m x 3m x 4m (H), divided by a partition into two 5 m compartments so that one half can be isolated for inspection while the other keeps feeding the cooling plant. A special I-beam skid base was designed to carry the tank on the existing plinth, and the beams were upsized for the full 4 m water load.
The tank was built from SS245 grade FRP panels at the 4 m height limit of the standard. A 1 m HDG guardrail runs around the roof perimeter, and two external HDG ladders with safety cages give access to the manholes at each compartment, with a level indicator on each. The layout was revised during design: the original proposal of two tanks of 4(2+2)m x 4m x 4m (H) was consolidated into one partitioned tank on a strengthened base.
A data centre’s make-up tank has to hold the capacity the cooling design calls for, and on this roof it also had to sit on a plinth that was already built. Magtech worked both constraints together and proposed one long partitioned tank, 10 m by 3 m, rather than the two 4 m by 4 m tanks first considered. The single tank gave the same redundancy with one base, fewer connections to the roof pipework and one set of access equipment.
Where the plinth layout did not match a standard skid, Magtech designed a special I-beam skid base to spread the tank load onto it. At 4 m the loads on the base and the internal tie rods are at the top of the SS245 range, so the beams were upsized and the tank reinforced to suit before the panels were set.
A tank of this height needs a guardrail on the roof and caged ladders on the sides. Both were supplied and installed with the tank so the manholes, vents and level indicators can be reached safely for the life of the installation.
A data centre cannot let its cooling towers run short of make-up water, so the storage tank has to be sized generously, split for maintenance and built to stay in service for decades. It also has to fit the roof it is given. FRP sectional tanks do this well: the panels do not corrode, the modular format allows a long footprint like 10 m by 3 m on an existing plinth, and a partition is a simple way to build in redundancy. The limiting factor is height, and a 4 m tank is where the base and reinforcement design has to be done properly.
With over 35 years of experience and more than 4,000 water tanks installed across Asia, Magtech continues to deliver FRP water tank installation for data centres, industrial plants and commercial buildings across Singapore.
