Magtech General Construction & Trading Pte Ltd carried out repair works on the FRP/GRP water tanks at New Futura, Singapore, covering two separate items in the same attendance: replacement of a broken manhole cover, and rectification of a leak on a second tank.
The first item was a broken manhole cover. On a water tank the manhole is the sealed access point into the stored water, so a cover that has broken is both an access problem and a sealing one – it is the lid that keeps the tank closed.
The complication was that this particular manhole was a model no longer available on the market. On a sectional panel tank the manhole is not a loose fitting that unbolts from the roof: it is built into the roof panel that carries it. With no replacement cover made for that model any more, there was no sound way to fit a current cover to the old opening. The correct repair was to replace the entire manhole cover panel together with a current-specification manhole, as a matched set, and that is what our team carried out.
The second item was a reported leak on another of the tanks. Our team traced the source of the leak and rectified it from the outside of the tank, using our own tools rather than draining the tank down to work on it from within.
Both items were completed on the same attendance, leaving the client with a properly sealed manhole and a rectified leak without a return visit for either.
We inspected the broken cover and checked what was available to replace it. That check is the step that determines the whole job, because it establishes whether this is a lid replacement or a panel replacement.
The manhole on this tank was an older model that is no longer supplied. Because different brands of tanks have different sizing and shape of manhole, a discontinued manhole cannot simply be swapped for a current one from a different brand- the opening itself will not fit the different size. We advised replacing the complete manhole cover panel so that panel, manhole and cover would match as a set.
The existing manhole cover panel was removed and a new panel installed complete with a current-specification manhole, restoring a proper seal at the access point.
On the second tank, our team located the source of the reported leak. Finding the actual source rather than treating the symptom is most of the work on a leak, and it is where experience counts for more than equipment.
The leak was rectified from outside the tank with our own tools, avoiding the need to drain the tank down and work from inside it.
On a sectional panel tank the manhole is not a bolt-on accessory. It is formed into the roof panel that carries it, so when a manhole model goes out of production there is no lid to order. What looks like a simple cover replacement is really a panel replacement, and the only alternative is forcing a cover that was never made for that opening onto a tank that needs to stay sealed.
Knowing which of the two situations you are in is the useful part. Older tanks from brands and model ranges that are no longer supplied are common in Singapore, and the components on them are not interchangeable with what is on the market today. Establishing that early avoids a wasted trip and a cover that never quite seals.
The same applies to leaks. The instinct is to assume a leak means draining the tank and working from inside it, with everything that follows for the building’s water supply. Often the source can be found and rectified from the outside instead – but only if it is correctly located first.
