SMC vs FRP vs GRP Water Tanks: What’s the Difference?

When looking for a sectional water tank, you may come across different terms such as SMC water tank, FRP water tank, and GRP water tank.

These terms are often used interchangeably in the water tank industry, which can be confusing for building owners, consultants, contractors, facility managers, and MCSTs.

In simple terms:

SMC refers to the moulding compound/material used to manufacture the tank panels.

FRP and GRP refer to the finished reinforced composite water tank product.

A modern sectional panel water tank may therefore be described as an SMC panel water tank, an FRP sectional panel tank, or a GRP sectional water tank, depending on the terminology used by the manufacturer, consultant, or project specification.

What Is an SMC Water Tank?

SMC stands for Sheet Moulding Compound.

It is a composite moulding material made from resin, fibreglass reinforcement, fillers, and other additives. This material is placed into a mould and compressed under heat and pressure using a hot press machine to form strong and durable water tank panels.

These moulded panels are then assembled on site to form a complete sectional water tank.

That is why many people refer to this type of tank as an SMC panel water tank.

The term “SMC” is commonly used when referring to the manufacturing method or the panel material itself.

How Are SMC Panels Manufactured?

SMC panels are produced through a hot press moulding process.

During production, the Sheet Moulding Compound is placed into a panel mould and pressed under controlled heat and pressure. This process helps create panels with consistent shape, strength, and surface finish.

The photo shown on the right is an example of a hot press machine used in the manufacturing process of SMC tank panels.

This process is important because sectional water tank panels must be strong, dimensionally accurate, and consistent in quality. Each panel needs to fit properly with the other panels during installation to form a complete water storage tank.

What Is an FRP Water Tank?

FRP stands for Fibreglass Reinforced Plastic or Fibreglass Reinforced Polymer.

An FRP water tank is a tank made from fibreglass-reinforced composite material. The fibreglass provides reinforcement and strength, while the resin helps form a durable, corrosion-resistant structure.

FRP sectional panel tanks are widely used for water storage because they are:

  • Corrosion resistant
  • Lightweight compared to steel or concrete tanks
  • Modular and easy to transport
  • Suitable for on-site assembly
  • Flexible in size and configuration
  • Suitable for many domestic, commercial, and industrial applications

The photo shown below shows GRP/FRP tank panels stored before installation.

What Is a GRP Water Tank?

GRP stands for Glass Reinforced Plastic.

In many cases, GRP and FRP refer to the same general type of reinforced composite material.

The main difference is the terminology.

FRP is commonly used in some regions to describe fibreglass-reinforced plastic or polymer products.

GRP is commonly used in other specifications to describe glass-reinforced plastic products.

For water tanks, both terms usually refer to sectional tanks made from reinforced composite panels.

This is why you may see the same type of tank being described as either an FRP sectional panel tank or a GRP sectional water tank.

SMC vs FRP vs GRP: Simple Explanation

The easiest way to understand the difference is:

TermFull NameWhat It Refers To
SMCSheet Moulding CompoundThe moulding compound/material used to manufacture the tank panels
FRPFibreglass Reinforced Plastic / PolymerThe reinforced composite material or finished tank product
GRPGlass Reinforced PlasticAnother name for fibreglass-reinforced plastic, commonly used in specifications

In short:

SMC is used to make the panel. FRP or GRP describes the finished reinforced composite tank.

This is why the same tank may sometimes be called an SMC water tank, FRP water tank, or GRP water tank.

Are SMC, FRP and GRP Water Tanks the Same?

They are closely related, but they do not mean exactly the same thing.

A more accurate explanation would be:

SMC describes the panel material and moulding process. FRP and GRP describe the finished reinforced composite tank.

For example, a manufacturer may use SMC hot press moulding to produce the sectional tank panels. Once the panels are assembled, the completed tank may be referred to as an FRP or GRP sectional water tank.

Therefore, in practical project discussions, these terms often overlap.

However, for technical accuracy, it is useful to understand the difference between the raw material, the manufacturing method, and the finished tank product.

Why Are SMC Panels Used for FRP / GRP Water Tanks?

SMC panels are widely used for sectional water tanks because they provide several practical advantages.

1. Consistent Panel Quality

The hot press moulding process helps produce panels with consistent shape, thickness, and finish. This is important because sectional tank panels must align properly during installation.

2. Good Strength and Durability

SMC panels are reinforced with fibreglass, helping the finished tank achieve good structural strength for water storage applications.

3. Corrosion Resistance

Unlike steel tanks, FRP/GRP tanks do not rust. This makes them suitable for long-term water storage, especially in humid environments such as Singapore.

4. Modular Installation

FRP/GRP sectional panel tanks are assembled from individual panels. This makes them easier to transport and install, especially in areas with limited access such as rooftops, basements, plant rooms, and existing buildings.

5. Flexible Tank Sizing

Because the tank is built using modular panels, the size can be customised based on site conditions, required capacity, and available space.

6. Suitable for Many Applications

SMC FRP/GRP sectional tanks can be used for various water storage requirements, including domestic water, fire protection water, industrial water, rainwater harvesting, and commercial building applications.

SMC FRP/GRP sectional water tanks are commonly used in:

  • Residential buildings
  • Condominiums
  • Commercial buildings
  • Industrial facilities
  • Hotels
  • Schools
  • Hospitals
  • Shopping malls
  • Fire protection systems
  • Rainwater harvesting systems
  • Domestic water storage systems

They are especially useful when a project requires a durable, corrosion-resistant, and modular water storage solution.

Which Term Should You Use?

If your project specification states GRP sectional water tank, you should follow the project specification.

If a supplier describes the product as an FRP sectional panel tank, it may still refer to the same general tank type, provided it meets the required standards, design requirements, certifications, and project specifications.

If you want to describe the product more completely, you may use:

Hot-pressed SMC FRP/GRP sectional panel water tank

This term explains both the manufacturing method and the finished tank product.

Final Summary

Although SMC, FRP, and GRP are often used interchangeably, they have slightly different meanings.

SMC refers to the Sheet Moulding Compound used to manufacture the tank panels.

FRP refers to Fibreglass Reinforced Plastic or Polymer, which describes the reinforced composite material of the finished tank.

GRP refers to Glass Reinforced Plastic, another common term for fibreglass-reinforced plastic.

In most water tank projects, an SMC panel water tank is also commonly known as an FRP or GRP sectional water tank.

The most important factor is not only the name used, but whether the tank is properly manufactured, designed for the intended application, compliant with the required standards, and installed by an experienced water tank specialist.
