For projects requiring stable water temperatures, FRP tanks can include insulated sidewall panels to reduce heat gain. They are suitable for cooling towers, HVAC and chilled-water systems, make-up and process water, and industrial cold-water storage.

Insulation thicknesses of 25 mm, 40 mm and 50 mm are available based on the project’s thermal requirements.

Is FRP Approved for Drinking Water in Singapore?

Yes—provided the sectional tank has been tested for compliance with the applicable potable-water standard. This should be checked before comparing price alone.

SINGAPORE STANDARD

SS 245:2014 is mandatory for potable FRP/GRP sectional tanks.

Since 1 June 2019, only FRP/GRP sectional tanks tested for compliance with SS 245:2014 may be supplied and installed in Singapore for potable water service. It is a regulatory requirement—not an optional quality tier.

The standard covers above-ground tanks of 500 litres and above. Length, breadth and depth follow 0.5 m multiples, with tank depth not exceeding 4 m.

For potable water storage applications, FRP/GRP water tanks should also be maintained according to PUB water tank requirements, including regular cleaning, inspection and certification where applicable.

SECTIONAL CONSTRUCTION

How an FRP/GRP Water Tank Is Built

Sheet moulding compound is hot-pressed into modular panels reinforced with glass fibre. Convex wall panels provide strength, concave floor panels assist drainage, and anti-slip roof panels support safer inspection access.

Panel joints use UV-resistant, food-grade closed-cell sealant. A properly assembled tank is leak-resistant and blocks light penetration, helping prevent algae growth inside potable water storage.

These are nominal volumes. Effective capacity is lower once freeboard and fittings are taken into account, so specify the effective requirement rather than the nominal one. Depth is capped at 4 m under SS 245:2014.

What Must Be Confirmed Before Installation

Tank price alone does not define the full project scope. Insulation, supports, fittings, access and maintenance requirements should be confirmed early.

Insulation Options

Non-insulated panels suit general storage. Standard insulated sidewalls use 25 mm or 50 mm insulation for chilled or expansion water; other builds may be available on request.

Skid & Concrete Plinth

The steel skid sits over a reinforced concrete plinth, normally with at least 450 mm support height. The concrete plinth is a separate contractor’s scope.

Standard Fittings

Typical fittings include a lockable manhole, insect-proof vent, ladders, level indicator and flanged nozzles for inlet, overflow, outlet and drain.

Potable Internal Ladder

Internal ladders for potable FRP tanks should be FRP or SS316. Aluminium internal ladders are not suitable for potable-water submissions.

Annual Maintenance

Potable tanks require annual cleaning, inspection and certification by the appropriate licensed contractor, with water testing by an accredited laboratory.

Typical Service Life

15–20 years

Actual life depends on water quality, installation, cleaning, inspection and timely panel or seal replacement.
